Annahazare's anti-Congress stance?

11 January 2012

With future looking uncertain and popular support dwindling fast, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare will on Tuesday announce his plan to campaign for a strong Lokpal Bill in four of the five poll-bound states.
The anti-graft activist will also make a formal announcement whether Team Anna will target the ruling Congress-led UPA government in the upcoming assembly elections or not.
The Core Committee of Team Anna yesterday met in Ghaziabad to assess the political situation and chalk out a plan on how to keep up the pressure over the Lokpal issue without targeting any political party.
During the meeting, Team Anna decided to campaign for a strong Lokpal Bill in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa but left the fifth poll-bound state Manipur out.
The meeting came against the backdrop of poor public response to Hazare’s agitation in Mumbai and Delhi in the last week of December and taunts from Congress on its anti-Congress plank.
“We discussed the pros and cons of various suggestions. We discussed the future programmes. We discussed how to build the campaign. No decision has been taken as Anna and some other members were not present here,” prominent Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan later told reporters.
Team Anna members Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan will travel to Hazare’s village Relegan Siddhi in Maharashtra to apprise him of the outcome of the core committee’s eight-hour meeting that took place yesterday.
Kejriwal and Bhushan will travel to Anna’s village as the 74-year-old activist has been advised by doctors to rest for a month. Anna’s aides were tightlipped about their first meeting after their leader had abruptly called off his fast in Mumbai and suspended the Jail Bharo agitation on December 28.
So, all eyes will be on Anna Hazare whether he continues to toe his anti-Congress line or decides to give a fresh impetus to the anti-corruption movement spearheaded by him last year.
