GVMC qualifies for JNNURM Plus

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has qualified for implementation of various projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Plus by complying with six mandatory and an equal number of optional reforms under JNNURM.
Detailing the progress made in his speech after hoisting the flag at the Republic Day celebration at GVMC, Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu said 10 of the 20 projects taken up under the urban mission were completed.
The corporation has taken up the projects at a total outlay of Rs.1,886 crore.
In JNNURM Plus a new city development plan will be prepared.
Among the major projects proposed are: urban transportation with a cost of Rs.2,000 crore, a pipeline to bring water from Yeleru reservoir to the city costing Rs.2,000 crore and Raiwada canal pipeline with Rs.200 crore, underground drainage network for Gajuwaka and Malkapuram areas spending Rs.400 crore, smart water drains at a cost of Rs.200 crore and tourism development to be taken up at a cost of Rs.100 crore.
The city has been sanctioned Rs.206 crore under the 13 Finance Commission funds to spent over a period of five years. For 37 projects covering solid waste management, tanks, urban forestry, infrastructure, forming of drains, changing pump-sets, improving water supply etc. the government has released Rs.34 crore. In the Rs.452 crore BRTU project, construction of foot over-bridges and bus shelters would be taken up soon.
AWARDS
The Commissioner recalled that the corporation has received three prestigious awards in 2011- Nagararatna, Euro India and JNNURM award.
Besides, it had won the urban mission awards for three consecutive years.
Mr. Ramanjaneyulu said people's response to green initiatives like introducing ‘vehicle-free zones' was quite good.
