News Update :

Threat of “Telangana storm” looming large again!

31 August 2011

The separate Telangana State issue which has been put on the back burner for the past few weeks due to various unexpected developments at the State as well as Central levels is likely to take the center stage once again shortly.

After the din and dust raised day in and day out by the votaries of a separate State from the Telangana region with different forms of agitation, calm and peace suddenly descended on the State with the TRS, Congress and TDP leaders from the region virtually observing a “truce” following the absence of AICC president, Ms Sonia Gandhi, from the country.

There is no denial of the fact that Ms Sonia Gandhi has a crucial role to play in untying the knotty issue for being not only the AICC president but also as a chairperson of the UPA. But her absence from the country following a surgery and subsequent rest in the USA has upset the apple cart in resolving the Telangana issue.

The Congress MPs and MLAs from the Telangana region, who have adopted various pressure tactics, including resigning to their posts were forced to abandon their agitations due to the ill-health of Ms Sonia Gandhi. With the Telangana Congress leaders deciding to lie low till the AICC chief recuperates after her surgery in the US, the TDP leaders from the region as well as the TRS leaders were also compelled to wait. The holy month of Ramzan and also the Ganesh festival have also come handy for the suspension of the agitation.

Meanwhile, the movement launched by Mr Anna Hazare against corruption and his indefinite hunger strike has caught nation-wide attention. This also compelled the votaries of a separate Telangana State to declare a holiday to their agitation as they realized that their movement would be washed away in the Anna wave sweeping the country.

Now with the country-wide struggle for the Jan Lok Pal Bill coming to an end and Ms Sonia Gandhi likely to return from the USA sometime during next week, the Telangana agitation is likely to be revived with full steam shortly. The  Sakala Janula Samme (general strike) by the Telangana employees which was deferred due to the festive season is expected to begin from September 6.

The TNGOs Union, which has the fully backing of the TRS-controlled TJAC, is determined to commence the strike. As a matter of fact, the Minister for Civil Supplies, Mr D. Sridhar Babu’s appeal to the employees to defer the strike was rejected. The chairman of the TJAC, Prof. Kodandaram, made it clear that there was no question of the strike being out off this time.

The Telangana TDP Forum members have been mounting pressure on the Congress legislators from the region to re-submit their resignations to the Assembly Speaker to force a constitutional crisis. The TDP legislators’ argument is that if they alone resign, it would only result in by-elections but if the Congress legislators too resign then in would create a constitutional as well as political crisis.

The Convener of the Telangana TDP Forum, Mr Erraballi Dayakar Rao, today even called on the Minister for Panchayat Raj, Mr K. Jana Reddy, who is also the Chairman of the Telangana Congress Legislators Steering Committee, and appealed to him to take a decision before September 5 for submitting their resignations to force a decision on the Telangana issue.

The people and leaders from the Seemandhra region are also preparing themselves to launch their own movements to make their views about a unified State be heard. Thus true to the adage “calm before the storm”, the State after nearly a month’s calm and peace is likely to reel under the T-turbulence in the coming weeks.
